What’s Thomas running from?

Fun fact: A lot of artistic people seem to believe that their depression is their muse when more often than not, it’s just a roadblock to getting shit done.

This is really real! I appreciate how it gives voice to what so many of us go through with mental health issues. The awkwardness of speaking to someone about stuff like this is challenging, unless they have had similar experiences. Thomas is a fascinatingly complex character. He seems to have gotten to a place of suffering so deep that he spitefully embraces the inevitable personality change with tinges of fear, anger, and determination. Just so honest and real, at a time we all need it the most.

Someone on Facebook was recently asking about how to tell their doctor they have depression. While it can be terrifying, I know from experience, the thing is they're not only professionals, they've heard it all before. When I finally reached the breaking point where I just didn't give a fuck about my life anymore and didn't care if medication changed me completely (they did not) I chose a doctor who specialized in mental health medicine. Why should it be difficult at all to speak to someone with that sort of background? Actually, I found it disturbing just how textbook my situation was, and had I had an honest chat with him decades earlier so much in my life would have been different, but so it goes.

I should take this opportunity to tell readers that although some of Thomas' experiences are very obviously drawn from my own, many are not. And this is, actually, an adventure story, not a drama about self-help, the depression is just an important part of understanding who he is which is why I spend so much time on it.
