While most of the memorial pages here have connection to the subject matter, this one is shared because it was someone who inspired me artistically. I lost one of my students today, a kid I was really close with. Philmar was my art student, but as is so often the case with teachers, he taught me as much as I taught him. He was someone I knew quite well. I'll miss him a lot.

He was from a developing country where money was tight so we're trying to do a fundraiser for funds. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. https://www.gofundme.com/philmar-solo039s-funeral-expenses

Only seven days after his 18th birthday - why?

He sent me a FB message on his birthday and told me he had blood cancer and was going to a more developed country for chemo. In the conversation he was in good spirits and joking around, he kept telling me not to worry about him. I think he knew he was worse than he was letting me know and just wanted to have a last conversation and that's something I'm grateful for. He's from the Marshall Islands though and there's a lot of leaking radiation still and so maybe it's just an unfortunate accident of his biology or maybe it's connected to that. Uncomfortably something similar is actually part of a future plot of this comic...

Thank you.

Now I don't know what to say. Someone in my neighborhood nearly made it and then died of some complication after apparently getting out of leukemia. And a classmate of mine died of cancer when he was 16, a fine guy, one of the finest.

I'm sorry.
